cant install postgreSQL

in order to get around the "stack builder" problem, i removed everything from my computer and started from scratch.
i removed PT3, all versions of postgreSQL. i only left PT2 and PTOmaha

downloaded postgreSQL, opened the .msi file and used the default options for the first few windows.
now when i come to the "service configuration" window, i type in a password, repeat it and click "ok". i then get an error message saying "invalid username specified".

i previously installed postgreSQL 8.3 on my computer and it worked just fine, no problems whatsoever, so using vista cant be the problem, i just cant get past my 2nd installation attempt...

i'm using vista and read the FAQ (i.e. deactivated the UAC, etc.)

what should i do?

i did, still not working. what message is supposed to come up in cmd when i type in "net user postgres/delete"?

as mentioned before, i had PT3 and postgreSQL 8.3 running WITHOUT any problems. i decided to get PTOmaha as well and thats when the troubles started. i removed everything from my PC to get a fresh start and get PTO working but now i cant install postgreSQL 8.3.

i'm convinced it has something to do with the fact that i wasn't able to delete the previous user by using the cmd function (i.e. "net user postgres /delete").

Make sure your account is an administrative account before trying to delete the user. The only thing that I can think of is that you're not being allowed to delete the user from insufficient privileges . . .

there's only 1 account on my computer so i think this must be the administrative one. any idea how i can check if i'm using the administrative account?

Disable 'User Account Control', reboot your computer then go Start->Run, 'cmd' OK.

Tutorial: Vista-How to Disable 'User Account Control' (UAC)

At the command prompt type:

Code: Select all

net user postgres /delete

That should resolve the issue :)

for some reason i had a space between "/" and "delete" and thats why it didnt work...
