Upgrade Computer for better performance

Hello,
I am planning on upgrading various components of my 1.5 year old Dell in order to boost performance of PT3 and Notecaddy. I am frequently importing large numbers of hands, and need to be able to work effectively with 5m hand+ databases. I have upgraded to Postgres 9 and made various performance tweaks in the config file, but I still want better performance. I plan on upgrading to the following components: Sata 3 (6Gbps) SSD, P67 motherboard, Core i5 2500k CPU, and 16GB of DDR 1600 ram. My questions are as follows. Are there additional components that could be added to this list that would additionally improve performance? After these upgrades, where will the performance bottleneck for PT3/Postgres likely be? Finally, would overclocking the new i5 CPU affect performance significantly? Thanks for the help!

With those specs, yes overclocking the CPU will help - or you could look into core i7s (and then potentially overclocking those). I haven't done extensive tests on hardware like that so it's difficult to say what the bottleneck will be at that point, but things will be improved.

Thanks Kraada! Are there any other component upgrades outside of the ones I listed that will result in increased performance?

Not particularly, those are the most important ones. You could up your RAM speed, though, I suppose, if your motherboard can handle it. Faster RAM is always a good thing.

Ya, I plan on upgrading the motherboard and ram. Can PT3 or PT4 take advantage of the 8 cores available in the Core i7 with the hyperthreading?

Yes, both can. You'll want to be running Win7 64 bit and make sue you use PostgreSQL 9.0's 64 bit version though for the best results.
